Recorders in Schools builds on the foundation of Roots of Music Program, by offering 5th graders weekly musical skill building. In partnership with classroom teachers who extend music making throughout the week, Recorders in Schools Teaching Artists guide students in learning music notation and ensemble performance, while they experience the neural, social and musical benefits of ongoing practice. Classroom teachers, empowered by professional development training, connect Meet the Music curriculum to units of study and daily life. Recorders in Schools provides 5th graders the foundation and inspiration to continue music studies in middle school and beyond. With funding from the California Arts Council, L.A. County Department of Arts & Culture, and the City of L.A. Department of Cultural Affairs, Recorders in Schools served 27 classrooms across eight Title I schools in San Pedro and Wilmington this school year. During the pandemic, the program continued online, providing meaningful music education for all students and keeping them connected to their creativity.
