Painting in watermedia/mixed media and collaging with papers and found objects gives me a chance to build upon a surface to reorganize a work from chaos to order. Construction of another world from the old one intrigues my eye. Water media paints, mediums, and surface textures lend themselves to this process and allow me to build paintings that reflect these changes from old to new to old again.

I try to balance dark against light, which may or may not create another overall shape. Writing is of particular interest to me as it reflects man's attempt to communicate an idea or theme. Sometimes I use my writing and sometimes I use someone else's written word. Color plays an important part in creating a new world from the old one. Some colors and shapes may suggest a new direction as I try to interpret what I see.

This process can be very time consuming as I look for new shapes to show themselves. I describe my process as intuitive versus preplanned. If I have preplanned, the work usually turns to intuitive. Sometimes I select colors and papers ahead of time. Sometimes I use a complementary palette. I always try to begin a painting in a different way from before.

Comments on the Chair:
Since I work intuitively, it took me awhile to bring the design together. As I worked out what I wanted to do, I became more enthusiastic about the chair. The motif is masks probably because Mardi Gras and Carnivale are upon us. The other reason is that as a drama teacher and coach, masks of all kinds have always fascinated me.
