The "Grand Chairs" & Their Artists

My art studies began at El Camino College in 1974. I received my BFA at the College of Creative Studies at the University of California Santa Barbara in 1980. In 1983 I enjoyed a Rotary International Award for study abroad, attending the Academia de Belle Arte, Florence, for the year '84-85. I completed my MFA at Cal State University Long Beach in 1993.

Since 1987 I have been living and working here in San Pedro in my studio at 339 W. Seventh Street. I am also a regular participant in the First Thursday Art Walk, showing examples of my photo restoration projects at Seventh Street Photo Restoration and Design. Since 1996, I have been a partner in a small company called Art Commandos. We design and manufacture sets for network news across the US and in Europe, and have received Emmy nominations for newsrooms in Houston and Washington, D.C. I also create imagery and monumental works in etched and kiln-fired glass with another long-time San Pedro artist, Scott Boren, at Boren Studios, also on W. Seventh Street.

My chair is an interpretation of one of the Warner Grand Theater's Art-Deco exit signs. It incorporates a combination of techniques from my recent creative and professional past. It has been laminated with sculpted rigid urethane foam; further decorated with wood and metal surface accents; and painted in the style of the theater's interior. I also used kiln-fused dichroic glass for the lettering of EXIT. The title of my chair is Exit to Sixth Street, San Pedro.
