The "Grand Chairs" & Their Artists

A self-taught artist, Tom Herold has been working with stained glass for over 20 years. Beginning as a hobby, his skills developed over the years. He soon mastered the techniques of cutting, leading, copper foiling, soldering, sand blasting and beveling stained glass. He also has developed the skill of fusing and slumping glass in a kiln. This is a technique he uses to create jewelry, vases, wind chimes and window hangings. Some of his more popular items are kaleidoscopes, dragon flies and art boxes.

With a degree in Earth and Marine Sciences, Tom's love of nature is apparent with his use of seashells, nautilus and driftwood to enhance his creations. His glass work is organic, in that it is continuously evolving as he integrates art and nature. Two of his more challenging and rewarding projects, are a 5 foot by 3 foot stained glass window replica of the Point Fermin Light House and a set of six panels, each 24 inches by 8 foot, on which is sand blasted a panoramic view of San Pedro's coast line. Tom's art work is displayed in galleries in San Pedro.

Tom's Gala Art Chair is a creation of stained glass, fused with dichroic glass in a kiln. The finished pieces are combined with irridized glass, then foiled and soldered together creating this unique objet d'art. The chair wood is hand carved maple.
