The "Grand Chairs" & Their Artists

Ralph Galante is a local custom cabinet-maker born and raised in San Pedro, graduated in 1957 from Mary Star of the Sea High School and received his degree in cabinetry from Long Beach City College. He has been a cabinet-maker for well over 48 years. As a contractor, he has remodeled kitchens, bathrooms and made various wood projects for many customers throughout San Pedro and surrounding areas. His love of woodworking is very apparent as he has built bedroom sets for himself, parents and also for his five children. He especially enjoyed making an oak dining room set complete with 12 chairs, along with a trestle kitchen table, grandfather clock, beautiful oak staircase and many other pieces of fine woodwork. His love of wood-work has created and designed this unique "ART CHAIR." From the very beginning of this project, Ralph has enjoyed the layout, drawings, milling, turning the legs on his lathe, putting the pieces together, the staining and final coatings of finish.

He has lovingly named this chair, made of red oak, an "ITALIAN LADDER BACK."
