The Grand Chair Affair was a unique three part awarness-building and fundraising event to support the Save Your Seat Campaign. It was held from February to April, 2005. See photos. The Affair featured a unique presentation of forty "Grand Chairs" - works of art made with or into a chair. Most of these are functional works of art. Participating artists live and work in and around San Pedro, a thriving artists' community. Grand Vision was thrilled to spark the creative energy of so many exceptional artists who were drawn to the notion that something as simple and mundane as a chair can most definitely also be art. Of course, the theme was in keeping with the overall goal of the Save Your Seat Campaign- to restore the Warner Grand’s 1,500 seats. Thanks to the participating artists, hardworking volunteers, sponsors, donors, and restaurants for making the Grand Chair Affair a creative, fun, memorable and successful event. Thanks too to everyone who came and bid on auction items. Congratulations to the lucky winners of the chairs! The Affair began with a spectacular gallery opening at the THM gallery on 6th Street, a block down the street from the Warner Grand Theatre. The chairs were on silent auction from the time of their unveiling at the reception, and bidding on several was already fierce that night! The show traveled up the street for a month, where the chairs were on exhibit and continued on silent auction at a storefront donated by San Pedro’s Renaissance Group. Finally, the chairs were displayed and auctioned at the Grand Chair Affair Gala, an elegant banquet held on a platform built special for the occasion atop the theatre’s seats. Perhaps we’re biased, but we don’t think the Warner Grand has ever looked so beautiful. Maybe someday, somebody will do it again! Particular thanks for that evening go to Simon’s Waterfront Banquet Center, Alva’s Dance Studio and the staff of the Warner Grand Theatre. |
